13 Life extension using HFMI of notched and prefatigued welded bridge details
Steel bridges and similar welded structures are highly susceptible to fatigue due to repeated loading and environmental factors, leading to costly repairs or replacements. This study investigates High-Frequency Mechanical Impact (HFMI) treatment as a method to enhance fatigue life of welded in-plane gusset plates, a common fatigue-prone detail in bridges. Specimens with pre-existing mild notches (0.15 – 0.35 mm) underwent pre-fatigue and HFMI treatment before fatigue testing. Results indicated HFMI significantly improved fatigue life compared to untreated specimens. Finite Element Analysis validated strain measurements, confirming HFMI’s effectiveness and supporting its broader implementation in bridge maintenance to extend structural service life.
